Brain injuries touch all of our lives. I have witnessed the toll that brain injuries take on the survivor, family and friends first hand personally and professionally. For the past ten years I have worked with children and adults who have sustained brain injuries.
Through these experiences grew an idea and it was to increase awareness about the realities of brain injury. I wanted teach everyone from the very young to the elderly how to make B.R.A.I.N Safe choices. It was this passion that led me to found Be Real About Injuries Now (B.R.A.I.N) Programs.
Amy’s qualifications consist of a bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education as well as a Master’s degree in working with Children with Disabilities from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Amy is also a Certified Brain Injury Specialist.
Doctor Dresdale: Vice President-Clinical Advisor
Lawrence E. Dresdale, Ph.D., Clinical Adviser. Dr. Dresdale is a clinical psychologist with extensive experience in the field of Behavioral Medicine. He combined biopsychology and clinical psychology in his graduate work to integrate knowledge of biological bases of behavior including brain-behavior relationships into clinical practice and was an Intern and Resident in the Department of Medical Psychology at the Oregon Health and Science University where he received training in neuropsychology. He is in private practice with the primary treatment modality being Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) to address a broad range of clinical issues including TBI.
Kathie Nelson joins B.R.A.I.N. as our Secretary. With years of experience in the medical field, she will be a great asset to the organization.
Kathie was a licensed practical (LPN) nurse. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Kathie was also a certified brain injury specialist trainer.
She has worked in a wide variety of areas that make her a knowledgeable asset to the organization. She has experience in trauma settings, social work, staff education and experience with people that have sustained brain injuries. She also taught brain injury prevention for years, all of these assets make Kathie an excellent addition to the board.
Amethyst Meyer is currently a Financial Service Representative at Bank of Greene County. She was born and raised in Kingston, New York and went to college for Environmental Science at E.S.F. in Syracuse, New York. When she is not at work, she enjoys going to social events and meeting new people. She is excited to be a part of B.R.A.I.N. Programs as its treasurer and looks forward to spreading its mission!
Dr. Richard J Burzine is a Physician Assistant practicing in the Kingston area and has over 23 years of experience in the field of Neurology and Neuro and Vascular surgery. He graduated from CUNY/Sophie Davis School of Medicine Harlem Hospital PA program) with his medical degree in 1995. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Neuro Vascular surgery. He is currently affiliated with numerous hospitals, including Health Alliance Hospitals Kingston (NY) Mid-Hudson Regional Medical Center Poughkeepsie, NY as well an advisory board member and clinical preceptor of The Marist College Physician Assistant Program.
Rich began his career in practicing Neurosurgery and Vascular surgery at Harlem and Lincoln Hospitals in New York specializing in Head and Vascular trauma as well preventive stroke management. After 13 years of inner city medicine, “City mouse" decided to move to the country.
Rich has practiced in vascular medicine and neurology in both the hospital and outpatient practice for almost 11 years here in the Hudson Valley and is currently the Assistant Director of Neurology Services at the Health Alliance Hospitals of Kingston, New York.
Being an avid biker, fly fisherman and hiker, Rich believes in leading a B.R.A.I.N. safe lifestyle and educating others as well. Spending his free time in the outdoors Rich found it troubling to see so many not utilizing the appropriate equipment for the activity they are participating in. It was this concern in regard to the risk of brain injuries that brought Rich to B.R.A.I.N.
A long-time advocate of bicycle helmet use, sports concussion awareness as well as his dedication to educating on stroke prevention that made B.R.A.I.N. the perfect fit for Dr. Burzine to really reach out to the community and help educate people on maintaining healthy brains!
